Sylvia Mary Gaul was born on June 21, 1916 to August and Amelia (Kenkel) Goeres in Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling where she remained a lifelong member. She attended country school and St. Joseph’s Catholic School.

On August 29, 1944, Sylvia and Aloys Gaul were united in marriage at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They became parents to four children: Dennis, Neal, Larry, and Arlene. She enjoyed life on the farm and helped her husband with milking the cows and other chores. She raised her children to appreciate the land and enjoyed their help in tending to her strawberries, fruit trees, and sweet corn.

Sylvia was a good seamstress and would sew using flour and seed sacks. She embroidered and spent many hours crocheting doilies and making blankets for her friends and family. Her faith was an important part of her life and she was active on the Altar Society and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas for fifty-one years.

After her husband’s death in 1984, Sylvia remained on the farm until becoming a resident of Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in 2007. She was admitted to Myrtue Medical Center where she died on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, having attained the age of ninety-six years, ten months, and sixteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson Dan Gaul, daughter-in-law Barbara Gaul, brother Isadore Goeres and sister Marie Goeser.

She is survived by her children: Dennis Gaul and his wife Sylvia of Earling, Iowa, Neal Gaul of Earling, Larry Gaul and his wife Bonnie of Earling, and Arlene and her husband Gary Hull of Omaha, Nebraska; twelve grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.

Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the 1:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Betty Gaul accompanied Dave and Ruth Hoffmann. Serving as casket bearers were Roger Gaul, Doug Gaul, Mike Gaul, Ken Gaul, Christopher Gaul, and Kevin Gaul. Interment was held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling.
