James John Katzer, Sr., was born September 23, 1936 to Albert Frank and Mary (Blum) Katzer in Panama, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady Of Fatima in Portsmouth, Iowa. James attended St. Mary’s High School in Portsmouth, Iowa and later left to join the United States Navy.

On October 18, 1958, James was united in marriage to Ruby Wynant at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Reno, Nevada. They became parents to seven children: James, Joseph, Jill, Jenice, Julie, Marjorie, and Mark.

James helped farm for a few years then worked in road construction which included the building of U.S. Interstate 680. He then drove a petroleum truck for Farm Service Coop. James started his own business twenty-five years ago called Western Best Liquid Feed Company and was currently running it at the time of his death.

James died on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa having attained the age of seventy-six years, eight months and two days. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by two daughters: Julie and Marjorie, one son: Mark, his brother Paul Katzer and brother-in-law Max Thygesen.

He is survived by his wife Ruby “Jean” Katzer; sons Jim Katzer Jr. and his wife Becky of Underwood, Iowa and Joseph “Jody” Katzer and his wife Susie of Council Bluffs, Iowa; daughters Jill and her husband Bob Holpuch of Rocklin, California and Jenice and her husband Tamer Sabra of Lincoln, California; seven grandchildren; brothers Albert Katzer and his wife Donna of Rapid City, South Dakota, Joseph Katzer and his wife Betty of Menifee, California, Fred Katzer and his wife Gracie of Huntington Beach, California; sister Cecelia Thygesen of Harlan, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

The 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Bob Shoeman and concelebrated by Rev. John Dorton on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Music was provided by Denise Reinig and the St. Mary’s Choir. Honorary casket bearers were Fred Katzer, Joe Katzer, Albert Katzer, and Tom Thygesen. Serving as casket bearers were Cliff Katzer, Jim Thygesen, Bob Holpuch, Tamer Sabra, Kriss Parker, Bill Thygesen, John Schoeman, and Keith Wilson. Military Rites were performed by Persia American Legion Post No. 314, Panama American Legion Post No. 601, and Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 547 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa.
