Jean Marilyn Doran was born on August 1, 1927 to Edwin and Mary (Petersen) Christensen in Harlan, Iowa. She attended Harlan Schools and graduated with the Class of 1944. She continued her education at the Colorado Women’s College in Denver for two years and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in education in 1948.

On June 26, 1950, Jean was united in marriage to Arthur Doran and became parents to three children: Kristen, Charles, and Lindsey.

Jean taught science and English at both Harlan and Irwin high schools, taking time off to raise her children. She was a loyal Hawkeye football and basketball fan and enjoyed going to the Harlan High School football games on Friday nights.

She was an avid reader and loved pursuing new learning. She traveled to Europe several times and spent many weekends at Okoboji with her family. Jean was also fascinated with her Danish heritage.

Jean died on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Methodist Hospital after a hip fracture in Omaha, Nebraska and had been a resident of Brookstone Village for over three years. She had attained the age of eighty-five years, ten months, and two days and was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Lindsey, and brother Donald.

She is survived by her daughter Kristen Halbersleben of Omaha, Nebraska; son Charles Doran and his wife Karol of Rockford, Illinois; three grandchildren: Kristie and Karrie Drake and Art Halbersleban; other family members and friends.

Pastor Donna Ewert officiated the 1:00 PM funeral service on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. Freda Boeck accompanied the church choir.
