OAKLAND –– Dean Hess, youngest of four children of Wilfred N. and Alta V. (Hansen) Hess, was born April 14, 1947 at home in Jackson Township, Shelby County. He attended Jackson #9 country school through fifth grade then the country school closed and Dean rode the school bus into Harlan where he graduated from high school in 1965.

In 1966, Dean joined the Army Reserves and received his basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, MO. He continued to live in Harlan until 1970 when he and his family moved to Carson, where Dean worked for Allen Implement. Dean then moved to Chariton, where he sold farm equipment and later began selling cars. In January 2000, Dean moved to Oakland and started working for Keast Chevrolet selling cars. Dean enjoyed helping people and was well known for his honesty and always had repeat customers when they were looking for a new or used vehicle.

Dean was a member of the Oakland Optimists. He was a huge NASCAR fan who loved watching the races and collecting NASCAR memorabilia. After high school, Dean raced cars at Denison and Shelby County Speedways. His family was his pride and joy. He dearly loved his grandchildren and attending their sporting activities.

In 2001, Dean was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome and after a long two year recovery and his own determination he was able to return to work. Dean unexpectedly passed away at his home in Oakland on April 18, 2013 at the age of 66 years and four days.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Duane and Dennis Hess; and sister-in-law, LuAnn Hess. He is survived by his children, Doug Hess and girlfriend, Susan Swanson, and Danielle of Carson; Kelli Burmeister and husband, Jamie, of Gretna, NE; and Jason Hess of Oakland; brother Dewey Hess and wife, Darlene, of Harlan; sister-in-law, Peggy Hess of Harlan; grandchildren Makenzie and Jackson Burmeister; other relatives; and a host of friends.

Funeral services was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2013 at Loess Hills Funeral Home in Carson with Reverend Mike Harvey, officiating. Visitation was from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013 at the Loess Hills Funeral Home in Carson. Musical selections were “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw and “Ain’t No Grave” by Johnny Cash. Casket bearers were Walt Keast, Tom Williams, Herb Strong, Delmar Brandes, Jim Vogel and Terry Turner. Honorary casket bearers were the Keast Chevrolet employees. Flower attendants were Vicky Henderson and Nancy Feauto. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Council Bluffs.
