Darlene Johnson, 82

ALBERT CITY -- Darlene Johnson, 82, Albert City, died Wednesday, April 24 at the Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines.

Services were held Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Laurens with burial in the Fairfield Township Cemetery at Albert City. Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City was in charge of arrangements.

Johnson was originally from Harlan. She is survived by children Becky (Dan) McFarland of Albert City and Scott (Kathy) Johnson of Laurens; five grandchildren and three great-grand-children; brothers Charles (Bonnie) Jacobs, Nicholas (Mary Helen) Jacobs, Kenneth (Verne) Jacobs and James (Judy) Jacobs; and sister Rose Ann (Gary) Larsen.

Darlene Johnson, age 82, of Albert City, Iowa died Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Laurens, Iowa. Visitation will take place Friday, April 26, 2013 from 5-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.

Darlene Marie Jacobs was born July 25, 1930 in Harlan, Iowa, the daughter of Nick and Lucy (Michalski) Jacobs. She received her first communion at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. In 1948, Darlene graduated from Harlan High School. Following her graduation, she attended Business School in Omaha, where she met her future husband.

On June 5, 1950, Darlene was united in marriage to George Johnson in Harlan. This union was blessed with two children: Rebecca and Scott. Shortly after their marriage, they lived in Albert City then a short time in Los Angeles, California.

She was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Laurens, Iowa, where she was dedicated to her faith. Over the years, she was proud to make her home a warm and comfortable place for her family. Additionally, Darlene had worked for the Albert City Elevator.

Many of Darlene’s interests included quilting, embroidery and flower gardening. She had a true gift for giving to needy causes such as St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota. George and she participated in card club for many years and travelled throughout the United States. Darlene will be remembered as a fantastic cook and a caring, loving mother.

Those left to cherish Darlene’s memory include her children: Becky (Dan) McFarland of Albert City; Scott (Kathy) Johnson of Laurens; grandchildren: Tammi (Sean) Newell; Shane (January Johnson) McFarland; Heidi (Rachel) McFarland; Kaitlin (Jacob) Peters; and Brandon Johnson; great grandchildren: Sofia Newell; Elise & Ava Peters; four brothers: Charles (Bonnie) Jacobs; Nicholas (Mary Helen) Jacobs; Kenneth (Verne) Jacobs; James (Judy) Jacobs; one sister, Rose Ann (Gary) Larsen; extended family and many friends.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, George in 2012; brothers: Raymond, LaVerne, Gordon and Victor; sisters: Evelyn, Lorraine, Bernice and Betty.
