Vivian Poldberg, 91
May 23, 1921 - April 10, 2013

WILDOMAR, CA –– Vivian Marie Poldberg was born to Chris and Elma Poldberg on May 23, 1921 in Harlan. She was the oldest of four children, and the only girl. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. After completing 10th grade in Kimballton, she attended and graduated from Harlan High School in 1941. She was instructed in Normal Training and licensed as a schoolteacher, teaching in many one-room country schools in the Shelby County Townships of Jackson (#’s 5, 7, & 8) and Center (#’s 4 & 5). Following the birth of her son, Lance, she quit teaching and worked in retail sales, working at The Golden Rule dress shop, Baker Grocery store, Booth Enterprises mapmakers, Zeke & Robbins aerial farm photography, and at Noble photography studio. In 1964, she and Lance moved to Escondido, CA, where Vivian worked at Escondido Cement Products Company, which supplied masonry contractors. She and Lance became members of House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Escondido.

Following her retirement in 1987 she moved to Desert Hot Springs, CA to be close to her brother, Robert Poldberg, and joined Christ Lutheran Church. In 1997 she moved to Wildomar, CA to be near Lance and Monique, and joined Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church. In this way she was able to be an active part in her grandsons’ lives, attending all of their school activities. She will be fondly remembered for her faithfulness (it would be a rare event at church that Vivian was not at). Her generous attitude and keen sense of humor will be greatly missed. Independent to the end, she drove herself to church services on Easter Sunday. In addition to her church activities, Vivian was a part of many other organizations, including bowling groups, Red Hats, Zonta Women’s Business group, Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, Lions, Sewing Club, quilting and knitting groups, and friendship groups. She also served on several local election boards and at polling precincts. She ran an annual Harlan, Iowa, Picnic in Escondido for many years.

She died in Hemet, CA on April 10, 2013 following a short hospitalization.

Vivian’s parents, Chris and Elma Poldberg, and her brothers, Dale Poldberg and Lyle Poldberg, preceded her in death. Her son, Lance Poldberg and his wife, Monique, and their two sons, Matthew and Jonathan, survive her. Her brother, Robert Poldberg of Kimballton, sisters-in-law, Myrna Poldberg of Harlan, Jeannine Poldberg of Carter Lake, and Rose Anne Poldberg, of Kimballton, as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, and many, many friends also survive her.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 15, 2013, at Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church with The Rev. Timothy Drom, Interim Pastor, officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons, Matthew Poldberg and Jonathan Poldberg. Honorary pallbearers were nieces and nephews, Colleen Beatty, Bruce Poldberg, Kelly Poldberg, Angie Madsen, Susan Hoegh, Connie Lykke, Ann Beltz, Warren Poldberg, and Brian Poldberg. Lector was The Rev. Ginny Bishop. Ushers were Gladys Fink and Rick Beilke. Musicians were Kristine Hansen, pianist, and Pam Reynolds, vocalist. Communion Assistants were Lee Roberts and Lois Perry.

Final inurnment will occur at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Jacksonville, on Tuesday, June 25, 2013. Memorials may be given to Shepherd of
Life Lutheran Church (30400 Grand Avenue, Lake Elsinore, CA 92530), or the church or charity of your choice.
