Disagreement at Bar turns to murder in Dow City
Jeff Blankman Reporting

Dow City, Iowa -- An argument and fight turned into gun shots and murder Saturday morning in Dow City. 28-year-old Benton Wingrove of Dow City faces first degree murder and going armed with intent charges after shooting and killing 29-year-old Adam Lary (Larry) of Dow City around 1:41 Saturday morning. Crawford County Sheriff Jim Steinkueler says the incident began in cheers, a local bar about 1:00 that morning. The two men engaged in a heated argument inside the bar before moving the disagreement outside. A few minutes later Wingrove returned to the bar. He left about 10 minutes later and patrons at the bar say they heard gun shots followed by a car engine revving. During the investigation Crawford County deputies found numerous shell casing scattered around the 300 block of School street. Deputies say Wingrove was standing at the intersection of Highway 30 and School Street with the gun at his feet when they arrived and stated he shot his pistol at a car that swerved. Wingrove had called the Communication Center in Denison to report he had shot a car that swerved. Lary was still in the car with a gunshot wound to the torso. The car had crashed into the garage of a home at 306 East Fulton. He was transported to Crawford County Hospital where he died around 2:20 a:m. A deputy investigated Lary’s White Ford Taurus and found multiple bullet holes and also found numerous shell casings scattered around the 300 block of Maple Street. All the casing were the same caliber and type for the gun at Wingrove’s feet. The 300 block of Maple Street is about a 3 blocks north east of Cheers and about a block east of Lary’s residence. Special Agent Daniel Dawson with the Iowa DCI states in his affidavit that Benton Wingrove left Cheers with a handgun and intended to discharge it into the car driven by Adam Lary. Wingrove is being held on a million dollars bond. A preliminary hearing will be held Monday at the Crawford County Courthouse.

Fight that started in Dow City, Iowa, bar turns fatal with pistol
By Emerson Clarridge
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

DENISON, Iowa — Two men were in a Dow City bar early Saturday, quarreling. One said they should take it outside.

They did, and soon Adam Lary, 29, was sitting in a bullet-pocked sedan that crashed into a garage, a gunshot wound in his chest.

He was dead within the hour, authorities said.

The man accused of killing him, Benton W. Wingrove, stood at Highway 30 and School Street, a pistol at his feet, authorities said.

Wingrove, 28, was charged with first-degree murder. Both men live in Dow City.

The substance of the argument inside Cheers II, on North Franklin Street, was not clear.

“I haven't gotten any details,” Crawford County Sheriff James Steinkuehler said at a news conference in nearby Denison.

Lary was already at the bar when Wingrove arrived about 1 a.m. During the argument, Lary left first. Wingrove followed, and returned breathing heavily, according to an affidavit written by an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation special agent who interviewed people in the bar. He stayed for 10 minutes and again left.

Other bar patrons told authorities they soon heard gunfire and a revving car engine.

After he was shot, Lary's Ford Taurus drove into a house's garage. Lary was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 2:20 a.m.

Wingrove called 911 to say he had opened fire.

“I just shot my pistol at a car that swerved,” he said, according to the affidavit. He gave a dispatcher Lary's name, and said Lary was driving.

Wingrove was being held at the Crawford County Jail on $1 million bail.

Dow City is about 60 miles northeast of Omaha. Slayings are unusual in Crawford County, where the last homicide occurred in 2009.

“We don't have something like this going on all the time,” Steinkuehler said.

Dow City man charged with murder after shooting

Christy Welch | Posted: Saturday, March 16, 2013 8:58 pm

A disagreement in a Dow City bar early Saturday morning led to the shooting death of Adam Lary, 29 of Dow City. Benton Wingrove, 28 of Dow City, has been charged with Murder in the 1stDegree and Going Armed with Intent. Wingrove is being held at the Crawford County Jail with a $1,000,000 bond.

Crawford County Sheriff James R. Steinkuehler reported on Saturday evening, “Approximately 1:40 a.m. this morning, the Crawford County Sheriff’s office received a call from a passerby who heard multiple gun shots, followed by a car crash near Highway 30 within the city limits of Dow City.”

At the same time, Denison Police Department 911 Dispatcher Cathy Lahr also received a call from an individual identifying himself as Ben Wingrove who told her, “I just shot my pistol at a car that swerved,” according to an Affidavit in Support of Complaint by Special Agent Daniel Dawson of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Dawson wrote that Deputy Todd Perdew responded to the area and found Wingrove standing at the corner of Highway 30 andSchool Street in Dow City. Perdew located and secured a handgun lying on the ground in front of Wingrove. Perdew also noticed a car crashed into the garage area of a residence. Lary, who was in the car, “appeared to have received a gunshot wound to his torso.”

Dawson wrote that numerous shell casings were scattered throughout the 300 block of School Street, which were the same caliber and type that would have been used in the gun found at Wingrove’s feet.

Altercation began at bar

Dawson’s investigation found that earlier in the evening Wingrove and Lary were both at Cheers II, a bar in Dow City. Dawson wrote, “At approximately 1 a.m., Benton Wingrove walked to the area of the bar area where Adam Lary was sitting and engaged him in a verbal argument.”

Steinkuehler said at this time he does not know what caused the incident.

“I haven’t gotten any details,” said Steinkuehler.

“There’s been some interviews conducted, and it’s still an ongoing investigation.”

Witnesses reported that the argument was very heated, and eventually a comment was made that the two should go outside, according to the Affidavit. Lary exited the bar with Wingrove eventually following behind, but returned a short time later breathing heavily. Lary never returned.

After approximately 10 minutes, Wingrove left the bar again, and witnesses recalled hearing multiple gunshots followed by a car revving up. Investigators found the vehicle Lary was driving had multiple bullet holes around various surfaces of the car.

Steinkuehler reported Saturday evening that approximately 10 shots had been fired.

Dawson wrote, “I concluded Benton Wingrove left Cheers, armed with a handgun, and intended to discharge said handgun into a car being operated by Adam Lary where Adam Lary subsequently died after suffering from such inflicted gunshot wound.”

Steinkuehler said that Lary was pronounced dead at the Crawford County Hospital.

“It’s surprising that something like this happened in Dow City. We don’t have something like this going on all the time.” said Steinkuehler.

“This is just shocking in a small town.”

Steinkuehler said that Wingrove will most likely be arraigned at a preliminary hearing on Monday morning.

The investigation was a joint effort between Crawford County Sheriff's Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Iowa State Patrol. Dow City-Arion Fire and Rescue and Crawford County Memorial Hospital also assisted.

Murder charge filed in Dow City shooting
Written by Ben Lucas
Mar. 16

A western Iowa man was charged with murder Saturday after he allegedly fired a handgun into a car driven by a man he’d been arguing with at a bar.

The victim died of a gunshot wound, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Benton Wingrove, 28, of Dow City is jailed on $1 million bond on a charge of first-degree murder after the death early Saturday of Adam Lary, 29, of Dow City.

Wingrove, who told police he opened fire when Lary’s car swerved, was also charged with going armed with intent.

Special Agent Daniel Dawson with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation alleges in a court document that Wingrove and Lary had a heated argument at Cheers bar in Dow City, a town of just more than 500 people southwest of Denison.

Witnesses told Dawson that the men took the argument outside and that Wingrove later returned. Wingrove left the bar 10 minutes later, said witnesses who heard the sound of a car revving and then gunshots, according to Dawson’s affidavit.

Wingrove reportedly called Denison police about 1:41 a.m. and told a dispatcher, “I just shot my pistol at a car that swerved.” He said the car had crashed into a house and identified the driver as Lary.

A Crawford County sheriff’s deputy arrived and found Wingrove standing on a corner with a handgun on the ground in front of him, Dawson said. The deputy secured the weapon and then saw a white Ford Taurus crashed into a garage.

Dawson said the deputy found Lary in the car. Lary was taken to Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, where he was pronounced dead because of a gunshot wound to the torso.

Shell casings found at the scene were of the same caliber and type used by the gun found at Wingrove’s feet, Dawson said. Multiple bullet holes were in Lary’s vehicle, authorities said.

“Benton Wingrove left Cheers, armed with a handgun, and intended to discharge said handgun into a car being operated by Adam Lary where Adam Lary subsequently died after suffering from such inflicted gunshot wound,” Dawson concluded in his affidavit.

The affidavit did not disclose the nature of the argument between Wingrove and Lary or their relationship. Further details were not immediately available.

Online court records show mostly traffic violations for Wingrove; he was fined after an intoxication arrest in 2010. Lary had in recent years been convicted of charges related to drunken driving, assault and burglary.
