Merle Langenfeld
(Died July 15, 2012)

Merle Jacob Langenfeld, age 90, of Carroll died on July 15, 2012 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, July 20, 2012 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Father Tim Johnson as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M.. Lectors for the Mass will be Kayla Venner and Megan Heiman. Gift Bearers will be Danielle Welker, Kelsey Schweers, Molly Langenfeld, and Shelby Klocke. Eucharistic Ministers will Laurie Steinkamp and Maxine Von Tersch. Mass servers will be Haley and Max Heithoff. Organist for the Mass will be Barb McDermott and soloist will be John Wagner. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday for viewing until time of the Mass. Interment will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery at Vail. Casket bearers will be Jeff Langenfeld, Craig Langenfeld, Josh Langenfeld, D. J. Langenfeld, Tony Mayer, Bryan Heiman, Zach Schweers, and Jacob Langenfeld. Honorary casket bearers will be grand and great grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in memory of Merle and memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church.

Merle was born on April 13, 1922 at Earling, Iowa and was the son of Henry and Mary (Wilberding) Langenfeld. He was married to Rita Mae Schnuettgen on January 3, 1949 at St. Peters Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa by Father Rosman. As a young boy he attended and graduated from St. Peter’s Catholic School. The Langenfelds lived in Earling and Vail and in 1998 they moved to Carroll. Merle farmed and worked at Prenger’s Funiture, Yellow Smoke Park at Denison, and New Hope Village. In his spare time he enjoyed woodcrafts, mowing, crossword puzzles, quilting with Rita, going on drives, fishing, computer games, his dog Reggie, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Merle was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll.

Merle is survived by his wife Rita of Carroll; a son Glen Langenfeld and his wife Pat of Rio Verde, Arizona; a daughter Mary Ziegler and her special friend Jim Vivyan of Willey, Iowa; a son Terry Langenfeld and his wife Jennifer, of Melvin, Iowa; a daughter LuAnn Langenfeld of St. Cloud, Minnesota; a son Dale Langenfeld of Villisca, Iowa; a daughter Sharon Smith and her husband Shane of Crescent, Iowa; a daughter Eileen Langenfeld of Carroll; a daughter Teresa Schweers of Glidden, Iowa; a daughter Peggy Klocke and her husband Jeff of Willey, Iowa; and a son Chris Langenfeld and his special friend Karlynn Wiederin of Ralston, Iowa; twenty one grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters: Ruth Koch of Earling, Iowa, and Jean Croghan and her husband Tom of Omaha, Nebraska. Merle is preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Mary Langenfeld, a sister Lolly Finken, and a grandson Jason Langenfeld.
