Dick, thanks for your response.

I am sure the Rochows are ours, since they did end up in Rock Island, across the street from the Peter Kahlkes, and Olga Rochow ended up marrying Arthur Kahlke in 1901.

The Huer reference appears very promising. My husband's aunt who passed away last year at 94 insisted Olga's birth parents were spelled Hoyer, but I have not been convinced.

I am a neophyte at this (Mom has finished my family--by "hand" since she refuses to learn to use a computer) so can you tell me how to get to the census records you referenced? I have tried but haven't found the "key". Do I need to go through a commercial site like Ancestry.com or is there a direct link?
