Besides being a housewife and mother, Doris was involved in genealogy, wrote poems, and short stories of the lives of her loved ones. She was part of the Daughters of American Revolution, Lioness of LeClaire, LeClaire Historical Society. Founding Member and organist of Goose Lake Ascension Lutheran Church. She and Freddie felt one of their most precious gifts was that of hospitality and invited people to their home for a beautiful meal and view of our beautiful Mississippi River. She loved to crochet and made baby blankets for all of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved hummingbirds and collected them and loved flower gardens and enjoyed garden parties at her river home. She enjoyed singing in the Messiah and also Country Chorale.

Everyone who would describe our mother would say she was the sweetest person they had ever met and could feel her love. Her doctors, caregivers and those who knew her commented, “She taught me how to love my family”.

She made a great effort to remember birthday greetings and celebrating family traditions to make each person feel special. She planned every detail for many months prior. She and a friend created wonderful Sunday School music memories and fun with bible camp songs and motions for the children. Many remember and it brings a smile to everyone's face. More fun.... More fun. Isn't that the Berries, iskabibal, (Oh Well), was common phrases she would say.
