Former Tipton Resident Dies In A Davenport Hospital

Harry Martens of 1826 Street Davenport, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in Mercy hospital at the age of 55 years, 9 months and 28 days, after becoming seriously ill Tuesday evening, although he had been in failing health for the past year. He was born April 30, 1896, near Moscow, Iowa, later moving with his parents to a farm near Tipton.

Mr. Martens was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran church in Davenport and a veteran of World War I. He was married to Miss Martha Specht in Davenport in 1919. Two daughters were born to them, the oldest passing away in infancy and his wife on April 24, 1949. He married Lois C. Walker on January 6, 1950. Survivors are his wife, Lois, and son, Jimmie Wayne, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Harriett Challberg, and a granddaughter, all of Davenport; his father, Henry Martens, of Walnut, Iowa; four brothers, Albert of Cleveland, O., Edward of Wilton, Lester of Golden, Colo., and Norwin of Tipton; four sisters, Mrs. Elmer Gladfelter, Alvin, Texas, Mrs. Lester Kyte of Walnut, Mrs. Joseph Bowman of Moscow, and Mrs. Walter Griffin of Moline, Ill.; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, three brothers, his wife Martha and an infant daughter.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Runge funeral chapel, Davenport with the Rev. William Eller officiating. Interment was in the Fairmont cemetery.
