A PIONEER’S DEATH
MRS. JOSEPH MOTIE AWAY AT HER CHICAGO HOME

A telegram from Chicago addressed to Mrs. Frank Huot, brought the sad intelligence of the death of her sister, Mrs. Mary Maguire-Motie, relict of Joseph Motie, in that city which occurred at 10:30 o’clock Tuesday Morning.

The deceased was a former resident of this city and county of which her mother, the late Margaret Maguire was one of its earliest pioneers. She was born in Ireland in 1829 and came to Iowa when a child. At the age of fifteen years she was married to Joseph Motie by Bishop Loras, the first incumbent of the Dubuque diocese, and the pioneer churchman of eastern Iowa, in the city of Dubuque in 1843, and shortly afterwards moved to Scott county, and later to Davenport, where she has made her home up to six years ago when she went to Chicago for permanent residence.

Mrs. Motie was a lady of estimable character, generous to a fault and possessed of a geniality of disposition which made her companionable. She was a thoroughly Christian mother and a devoted wife, aiding and encouraging her husband in the early days of the activity upon these stubborn Scott county acres and in the duties of a helpmeet. Her kindness, piety and personal worth wrought much good in the community in which she lived, and there are many old residents who will be shocked to hear of her death.

The deceased was possessed of robust health up to half a dozen years ago when the fatal lagrippe attacked her, which she never thoroughly overcame. Her death yesterday at the age of 68 years was the result of that protracted ailment, complicated with asthmatic troubles.

Mrs. Motie is survived by two brothers and one sister – Desk Sergeant Richard Maguire of the police station in this city, Michael Maguire, out wet and Mrs. Frank Huot, also of Davenport. Ten children, all of them occupying positions of trust, also survive to mourn the loss of so pious a mother with whom all were associated by the closest of ties in comradeship which was as touching as it was edifying. They were all at her bedside when she breathed her last. Seven daughters, two in religion, survive – Margaret, now Mrs. Lynch of Chicago, Louise, now Mrs. William Fayle of Muscatine, Ella, now Mrs. Ward of Manchester, Lillie, now Mrs. Ed Keating, and Mary, now Mrs. Gilloley of Chicago, Josie, now Sister Mary Isidora, superioress of the academy at Boone, Ia., and Emily, now Sister Mary Henrietta at St. Joseph’s Academy in Rock Island.

Three sons – Frank, Postmaster at Odebolt, Ia.; George, salesman, and Henry, peace officer in Chicago, also mourn her loss. Joe L. Hebert of this city is a nephew of the deceased.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at 9 o’clock from the residence of her sister, Mrs. Frank Huot, 432 East Ninth Street, with solemn requiem mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, the remains being brought to this city from Chicago on an early train, accompanied by the children of the departed. Interment will be made in St. Marguerite’s cemetery.

[CONTRIBUToR'S NOTE: The decedent was the daughter of Pat Maguire 1797-1861.]
