Death Summons Rudolph Rohlfs Popular Business Man and Bank Official

Rudolph Rohlfs, a prominent life-long resident of Scott county and a director in the American Commercial and Savings Bank as well as former vice president of the Farmers & Mechanics Savings Bank, which was recently merged with the American Commercial & savings Bank, passed away at his home, 1946 West Third street at 10:15 last night. He had been ailing for several weeks.
Mr Rohlfs was treasurer of Scott County for 7 years, serving from 1902 to 1909. He was born on a farm northeast of Davenport Feb. 1, 1856 a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Rohlfs , pioneer Scott County settlers. He was reared on the farm of his parents, and received his education in the rural schools, later graduating from Griswold college in Davenport.
Following his schooling he took a position as deputy county treasurer, serving under his father who at that time was county treasurer. He served in that capacity for ten years, and then entered into a partnership with William Bishoff under the name R. Rohlfs & Co. He sold his interests in that company and was shortly elected county treasurer.
Nine years ago he retired from the Tri-City Button Co. which he became connected to 16 years ago.

A Bank Founder.
Mr. Rohlfs was one of the founders of the Farmers & Mechanics Savings Bank, serving as a director, and at the time of the consolidation with the American Commerce and Savings Bank, was vice president of the smaller bank.
He was also vice president, director, and one of the founders of the Guarantee Life Insurance Co., as well as vice president and a director of the Security Fire Insurance Co. Fraternally he was a member of Scott Lodge No. 37, I. O. O. F.; The Davenport Turner Society, and Columbia Sick Relief society.
In 1880 Mr. Rohlfs was married to Emma Von Doehren , who preceded him in death in 1891. To this union three children were born. In 1893 he remarried, at that time being married to Miss Emma Wendt, who survives along with one daughter, Mrs. J. H. Schultz of Davenport; five grandchildren and one brother, Theodore Rohlfs, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Rohlfs Maier, both of Avoca, Ia. A daughter, Lillie, died in 1891, and a daughter, Ella, preceded him in death in 1911.
The body was removed to the Runge Mortuary. The funeral will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. from the late home, and burial will be in the Fairmount Cemetery.
