Obituary

WHITE

The many friends in this city of Mr. W.K. White were startled and pained to learn that he died at 2 a.m. yesterday morning although a fatal termination of his malady had been expected since Monday. Mr. White was conscious nearly to the last and was able to talk although his entire body was paralyzed.

By his death the Scott county bar loses one of its most able and hardest working members. He was a well equipped lawyer especially in patent matters, and enjoyed an extensive practice. He was highly esteemed by his associates as a genial, whole souled gentleman and there is universal regret that fate should have willed his death so many years before the allotted life of a man had been completed.

Mr. White was born at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1844, and received his education there at an early age he commenced the study of law and in due time was admitted to the bar. From 1865 to 1868 he was in the south, having been appointed to a position in the Freedman's bureau. That year he made a trip north and visiting Davenport formed ties that have kept him here since. His career in this city is too well known to be outlined, except that is it was the career of a conscientious, honest lawyer, with a distaste for criminal business and legal quibbling. He was straight forward in his dealing and was respected accordingly. In his political affiliations he has been for years a Republican, and while he worked for the success of his part at all times he never sought office. He was also high up in the Masonic circles.

In 1872 Mr. White married Nellie Berger of Ottawa, Ills. She survives him with a daughter, Miss Mamie. The obsequies will be held at Ottawa next Saturday afternoon, the funeral party leaving this city on the 7:15 a.m. Rock Island train.
