Obituary

CHARLES H. ELDRIDGE

Charles H. Eldridge, who came to Davenport in 1835, when a little boy, with his parents, and lived here so long, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mamie Campbell, at Kansas City last Wednesday. His remains are expected her by express this (Friday) morning and will be interred at Oakdale where funeral services will be held.

Mr. Eldridge was a brother of Micajah, and a half brother of Jacob M. Eldridge of this city. His wife and seven children survive him. These are Mary, Annie, Ray and Harry, with their mother in their Locust street home; E.G. Eldridge, of this city; Mrs. Campbell at whose home he died, and Mrs. Carrie Burpe of Vermillion county, Ill.

Charles H. learned the printing business in the Gazette office when conducted by Alfred Sanders and Levi Davis.

He was postmaster for a period after the village had grown to a city, as his father had been before him in the early days, and really Davenport's first postmaster. In after years Mr. Eldridge was in the real estate and abstract line, and secretary of the Davenport National Fire Insurance company, but went to Kansas City some time ago. Many kindly recollections of "Charley" remain with old-time citizens of Davenport. He was for a long interval secretary of the Pioneer Settlers' association of this country.
