Charles Yerington

DAVENPORT – Memorial services for Charles C. “Chuck” Yerington, 77, a resident of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Davenport. Pastors the Rev. George White and the Rev. Rhonda Schultz will conduct the services. Private burial will be held in Davenport Memorial Park where military rites will be accorded.

The family will receive friends on Friday at the church from noon until the service time.

Following Chuck’s wishes his body will be cremated. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Yerington died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, after an extended illness.

Charles Chester Yerington was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Rochester, Iowa, the son of Archie and Zella (Figgins) Yerington. He married Donna Jean Smith, of Tipton, Iowa, on June 15, 1947, in Tipton. She preceded him in death.

Chuck retired in 1977 as a Lieutenant from the Davenport Police Department, having served on the force for 28 years. Lt. Yerington had been active in the Iowa State Police Department, Davenport Police Officers Association Local #2, and the Retired Police Officers Association. He served most of his career in the Patrol Division with a short service in the Juvenile Bureau. He was extremely proud of the police uniform.

In retirement he worked part-time for Twin Bridges Truck City of Bettendorf, Iowa.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S.
LCI 436 as a gunner’s mate.

Chuck loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed traveling with his wife of almost 50 years, Donna Jean, until her death on April 28, 1997. He received great satisfaction attending Navy Veterans of World War II reunions and reminiscing about the war years and his time aboard ship. He also was an accomplished woodworker, having made hundreds of items for his family and friends.

Survivors include his daughter, Pam Yerington, a son Phil Yerington, the current Mayor of Davenport, and a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Connie Yerington, all of Davenport; four grandchildren, Brandi, Kyle, Seth and Ryan Yerington, all of Davenport; a brother, Don Yerington, of Missouri; and a sister, Jan Hamiel, Tipton.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Howard and Harry; and a sister, Mildred Witmer.

Chuck’s request was that family and friends not mourn his death, but celebrate his life.
His thoughts were that life was a journey and that death was merely a part of that journey.

In lieu of flowers or plants, Chuck’s wishes were for memorials to be made to Genesis VNA Hospice Care Program, the National World War II Monument Fund, or to Gilda’s Club of Davenport.

May he and Donna rest in peace together.
