BENNETT, Iowa --

Jean R. Walter, 76, Bennett, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at her home.

The Rev. Barbra Keiper will officiate the services. Musical selections will be provided by organist, Deb Mohr, and vocalist, Henry Bentley. Casket bearers are her grandsons, Bryan Thoma, Jeff Hogan, Aaron Thoma, Colin Walter, Morgan Walter and nephew Kyle Petersen. Burial will be at Inland Cemetery, Bennett.

Memorials may be made to Peace Church of Christ United, Bennett.

Mrs. Walter was born Sept. 25, 1928, in Durant, the daughter of Arnold and Helen Peters Petersen. She married Donald D. Walter June 27, 1948, in Davenport.

She graduated from Durant High in 1946 and then attended the Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. She taught in Cedar County in a one room school. She married, raised her family, and then attended Muscatine Community College. She received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from the University of Iowa and a master's degree in library science from the University of Iowa graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She was a teacher librarian at Bennett Community School for 25 years, retiring in 1990.

She was a member of Peace Church of Christ United, Bennett, the American Association of University Women, National Education Association, Iowa Education Association, Bennett Education Association, University of Iowa Alumni Association, Cedar County Historical Society, Iowa Historical Society, Cedar County Genealogy Society and the Iowa One-Room Teacher's Association. She enjoyed reading, dancing, flowers and bird watching.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Julie Hogan and husband, Michael, Judy Thoma and Jackie Squire and husband, E.J., all of Durant; a son, Don 'Chip' Walter and wife, Julie, of Iowa City; a brother, Tom Petersen and wife, Chris, of Durant; her mother-in-law, Dolly Walter of Tipton; five grandsons; and one great-grandson, Max J. Thoma.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
