William Ferdinand Westphal, an aged resident of Davenport and Scott county, passed away at 9:30 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed. Brehmer, 2305 Bowditch Street. He had been ailing for past number of years, and death was due to old age.
Mr. Westphal was born in Oldenburg, Holstein, Germany, January 29, 1829, and was raised and educated in Germany. He came direct to Davenport in 1857. He was married twice, his first wife passing away three years after their marriage. He was married a second time in 1865, he was united to Mrs. Marie Heuer in Davenport. She preceded Mr. Westphal in death 15 years ago.
Mr. Westphal was a soldier in the war of 1848, and also served as a private throughout the Civil War. For the past fifteen years he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Edward Brehmer. He was a member of the Hermann Sons Lodge No. 489, of Davenport. For many years he was the proprietor of a brick yard on Sharon Street, but was retired from business over 30 years.
He is survived by the following children; Henry, Adolph, Miss Maggie Heuer; Fritz Westphal, Mrs Edward Brehmer, and Robert; one brother, Adolph Bock, 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will take place from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Brehmer, 2303 Bowditch Street, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Services at both the home and the grave in Fairmount cemetery will be private. The family request no flowers.
