James Houghton.

James Houghton, who was seized with paralysis while attending the funeral of Mrs. Hender -- mention of which was made in The Gazette at the time -- died at 6 o'clock, p.m., yesterday, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends, and the attending physician, Dr. A. W. Cantwell. He was unconscious during the day, and apparently suffered but little. In the afternoon he was seized with another stroke of paralysis, but he lingered until the evening, when he passed quietly away. Deceased was born in Preston, County Lancashire, England in September 1814, and came to Davenport in the year 1842, residing here continuously since. He leaves a wife and three grown children; two sons and a daughter. The eldest child is Mrs. Nichols, who resides in Rock Island, the next is James, driver of Hose No. 3, of this city, and the youngest, John, who attended the farm. He also leaves two brothers and two sisters; Richard, who lives on Madison street, Moses, now living in Newton, a sister in St. Louis, Mrs. Margaret Sumner, and one in Salt Lake, Mrs. Alice Greenwood. Up to the time of his death, the deceased was engaged in the dairy business. He had a very large circle of friends, being of a genial, kindly disposition, and a loving, kind father. His sudden demise is very much regretted by all those who were acquainted with him, and his widow and children have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement.
