M. J. Cronin Is Summoned

Was Telegrapher Here for 40 Years on C. R. I. & P. Junction.

Michael J. Cronin, a resident of Davenport for 40 years and telegraph operator on the C. R. I. & P. southwest junction at Fifth and Taylor streets the entirety of that time, died at his home, 2112 Marquette street, at 10:40 o'clock Saturday night. Death resulted from heart disease and terminated an illness of two months' duration. He was in his 62nd year.

Mr. Cronin was well known in Davenport, and his death will come as a shock to a circle of close friends as well as many acquaintances, many of whom grew to know him by his jovial smile and friendly wave, bestowed upon them while passing his telegraph station on the Fifth street crossing. He was a devout and practical Catholic, and was a member of the M. W. A. and the Railroad Telegraphers organization.

Born in County Cork, Ireland, Oct. 29, 1865, the decedent came to this country and settled near Marengo, Ia., in 1881. Five years later he came to Davenport, and immediately was employed as telegrapher in the Taylor street junction. He was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Powers, Nov. 25, 1887, in St. Mary's church, the late Monsignor J. P. Ryan performing the ceremony. His wife preceded him in death in 1914.

Surviving are two daughters, Miss Mae A. Cronin, and Mrs. Anthony Wallace, both of Davenport; one son, John G. Cronin of Los Angeles, and three brothers, Patrick J. of Marengo, Cornelius of Muscatine, and Daniel J. of this city.

The body was removed to the Halligan Funeral Home and will be taken to the late residence late Monday morning where it will remain pending the arrival of the son, John, of California. The funeral arrangements will be completed upon his arrival.
