OBITUARY
WILLIAM S. ATWOOD
Saturday morning at a few minutes before 7 o'clock occurred the death of a well known citizen, William S. Atwood. While Mr. Atwood occupied a humble position in life, yet he was a man who has a warm heart and no needy person ever applied to him for aid and was refused. He was strictly honest in all his dealings with his fellowmen. He was born in Canada, Jan. 17, 1815, and when a young man came to the United States. He enlisted in the regular army and served in the Seminole war, the Mexican war and also in the Blackhawk war. He passed through this part of the country when there was but a house either in Davenport or Rock Island. He was stationed near Prairie du Chien when Jefferson Davis, then Lieut. Davis, ran away with a Miss Taylor near that place. He was always fond of telling reminesciences of his war experiences and his friends were always glad to listen to him. He never allowed any disturbance in his place of business. He leaves a wife to mourn his death. The funeral will take place Monday morning at 10 o'clock.
