Drinks Hooch Smothers to Death in Bed
H. F. Claussen Found Dead with Head Buried in Pillows
Dead, and with his head in a pillow, face down, Herman Frederick Claussen, was found in his apartment at a rooming house at 327 Fillmore street, Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock.
He had been drinking heavily Saturday night, and
was put to bed by other roomers. During the night, he evidently rolled over, face downward, and, without realizing the fact, slowly smothered out his life in the pillow. Other roomers who knew him, and went to look after him on Sunday, found him fully clothed, and lying on the bed dead. The coroner was summoned, and after examining the body, declared death due to smothering.
The deceased was born in Germany in 1877, and has been a reident of Davenport the past ten years. He was employed practically this entire time by the Brammer Manufacturing company. His wife preceded him in death three years ago.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Peter Hintze, a sister, Mrs. Ida Gunther, both of Davenport, and one brother, John Claussen of Wheatland, Ia.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Halligan funeral home, and interment will take place in Pine Hill cemetery.
