Scott Pioneer Dies at Home near Big Rock
Joseph Hickson, 78 [sic], Resident of County for 75 Years, Succumbs
Big Rock, Ia., Jan. 3 - Joseph Hickson, Sr., for 75 years a resident of Scott county, died at 1 o’clock this morning in his home a mile south of Big Rock. Death ended an illness of several weeks’ duration.
Mr. Hickson was born Nov. 13, 1836 in Monmouth county, New Jersey, and when he was 3 years old, the family moved to this community, where they have since resided. He enlisted in the Ninth Illinois Cavalry, Dec. 29, 1861.
The surviving family includes his widow, formerly Miss Mary Ann Trucks and three children, Charles of Big Rock, Mary E., at home, and Mrs. Sarah Nagel, Davenport. Three sisters, a brother and three grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 1 o’clock Monday afternoon in the home. Burial will take place in the Big Rock cemetery. The family requests that no flowers be sent.
