Suicides at Dwight

Telegram Announces Death of John Jacobsen

The Tragedy Occurred Last Evening, the Telegram Being Received in This City at About 10 o’clock - Belonged to Many Orders and was Well Known in Davenport

A telegram which was received in the city last evening brought the intelligence that John Jacobsen of this city had suicided at Dwight, a smll place near Chicago. The telegram was sent to Mr. Petersen of the local branch of the Order of the Danish Brotherhood by the treasurer of the same order in Chicago. The telegram did not state the manner in whih Mr. Jacobsen ended his life. It merely stated that John Jacobsen, a member of the Danish Brotherhood had suicided in Dwight.

The deceased was born in Laudupt, North Schleswig, Germany, 47 yeas ago, but for many years has lived in this city where he numbered many friends. He is survived by his wife and the following children: John, Andrew and Harry Jacobsen and Mrs. Mary Schultz.

The residence of the deceased is at 1541 West Third street. Mr. Jacobsen is a member of the following orders; Danish Brotherhood, Claus Groth Guilde, Davenport Turnge meinde and the Independent Order of Redmen.

The deceased for many years past was engaged in the saloon business in Davenport. For many years he was connected with Sam. Norgordt at the “Comet” saloon, corner of Second and Scott streets. Later he ran the Western House saloon and at the time of his departure from Davenport about three weeks ago, was connected with the Mile Track saloon on Harrison St.

About a week ago, Mr Jacobsen wrote a letter to Samuel Norgordt. The letter was postmarked at Chicago. The letter plainly showed that Mr. Jacobsen was discouraged but nothing was said concerning suicide. By some it is said that Jacobsen went away to secure employment. Various other reasons are also given, however, for his departure from the city.

It is expected that the funeral will be in charge of the Danish Brotherhood. The date of the funeral has not yet been set, the body of the deceased not having arrived in the city at noon today. The interment will be at the Danish Brotherhood lot in the West Davenport cemetery.
