The Davenport (Iowa) Daily Leader; Thursday, July 5, 1900:
Maisack
The public in general and especially the old time residents of this city will be pained to learn of the demise of Mr. Gottlieb Maisack, the old time popular baker at 1047 West Third street, at 1:45 o’clock Wednesday morning. He was ailing for two years, but for the past three months he had been unable to leave the sick room. A complication of diseases - at attack of dropsy - ended a busy and useful life at the time mentioned.
Mr. Maisack was born Dec. 2, 1832, at Beckingen [sic], Wuerttemberg, in Southern Germany, coming to America in 1856. During the civil war he was engaged in baking on the Government island while the confederate prisoners were imprisoned there. Later, he was engaged in the same capacity by William Pape, who operated the bakery on Harrison street between Third and Fourth streets, now known as the Vienna Bakery, operated by Henry Korn and Sons. He was married in 1858 to Magdalena Harzer, and nine children were born to them, of which two preceded their mother and three thereafter to the grave, his first wife having died Jan. 8, 1881. On Oct. 24, 1882, he was married to the sister of his first wife, Miss Caroline Harzer, who now survives him with two daughters, Lena and Louisa. Besides these, the following children survive - Theodore, Mrs. Salome Toens, George, Chas. and Robert.
He was an ideal citizen, and beloved by all who knew him for his honesty and integrity. He was an active and contributing member of the old time Liberty Steam Fire Engine company, No. 1 for 18 years and a member of the Veteran Volunteer Firemen’s association. He also belonged to the West Davenport Sick Relief association, Davenport Grove, No. 4, U.A.O.D., United Brotherhood of Iowa, and Germania lodge, No. 5, A.O.U.W., all of which will attend the funeral in a body. It will take place from the late residence, 1047 West Third street, Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock with interment in the City cemetery.
