JACOB I CROOK HAS PASSED AWAY
Veteran of Civil War and Respected Citizen Dies of Old Age

Surrounded by his immediate family and patiently waiting for the end, Jacob Ira Crook, one of Davenport's most beloved and respected citizens, passed away last night at 10:30 o'clock at St. Luke's hospital after several weeks of confinement. He had been in poor health for a number of years from a complication of ailments aggravated by the progress of age with its burdens. He was taken to St. Luke's hospital about six weeks ago and there was cared for by a skillful physician and efficient nurse. His sons and daughters were daily visitors and seldom was he without the loving presence of a kindred watching over him. He realized weeks ago that the end was approaching and welcomed the change as a chariot that was to convey him to endless rest and peace.

Mr. Crook was born in Stendon county, New York, July 11, 1836. He enlisted in the U.S. army, Aug. 16, 1861, and was a member of Co. A. of the Forty-seventh Illinois infantry. He served three years and was honorably discharged in 1864. He reentered the army at Hartford, Conn., Feb. 8, 1865, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war, Feb. 7, 1866.

He was married Nov. 1, 1864, to Miss Louisa H. Stringer at Peoria, Ill. They lived happily together until April, 1896, when Mr. Crook died in this city. There were born to this union two sons, Lester J. and Roland W. and two daughters. A baby girl was adopted, who has always been held in the same close family endearment as the rest of the children. The daughters are Mrs. D.N. Albaugh of Davenport, and Mrs. A.S. Collins and Mrs. Charles F. Weber of Buffalo, N.Y. Mr. Crook was in business with his sons for a short time and retired from the firm five years ago.

Mr. Crook was in business with his sons for a short time and retired from the firm five years ago. Since then he has found a congenial home with his sons and daughters, electing his residence as it suited his convenience, with filial welcome to greet him each at each and all the homes. Mr. Crook was, with his wife, for many years a member of Calvary Baptist church. He was also a member of the Grand Army Post and was connected with The Woodmen of the World.

The funeral services will be held at the home of his son, Lester Crook, 10 Park Lane, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Dr. H.O. Rowlands will officiate. The same hymns will be sun and scripture read as served at the funeral of his wife.
