Elijah Spurling Family

Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Spurling and seven children moved to the Early vicinity in the spring of 1920 from Wabash County, Illinois.

Elijah was the son of Henry and Hester Jane (Biehl) Spurling. He was born March 1872 and was baptized a Lutheran. Little is know of his ancestors, since his father's parents died when he was very young.

Ella Nora Mayne Spurling was born June 1873. She was the daughter of Clark Adam and Phila Hill Mayne. She was a Christian Science member, therefore being baptized by immersion. Her ancestors have been traced back as far as President Madison.

Spurlings were parents of nine children; Henry Clark, who died as a young man; Iva (Mrs. Ross Stevens), who came to this area with her husband, resided in the Pleasant Hill area before her parents were here. Stevens had ten children; Paul born in 1899 and die din 1946 after a lengthy illness; Roscoe, born in 1901-married Mary Jarvis. They had five children; Enola (Mrs. Ernest Schade) born in 1904; Kenneth born in 1907, married Leona Albrecht. They were the parents of seven children, they lived in Lake View, Iowa; Jean (Mrs. Francis Gard), married September 1929. They had two children, Richard Allen born in 1930 and Marilyn Joyce born November 8,1932. Richard married Catherine Murphy Straight in 1961, she had two small children, Monte and Regina. Marilyn married Stephen McCall in 1957, they had five children. Francis died in September 1978; Irene, born in 1913-married Arnold Schrooten and after his death in 1963 she married Raymond Schaefer, they lived in Rogers, Arkansas; Alberta (Mrs. Alfred Schramm) born in 1916. They had four children and lived at Bentonville, Arkansas.

After farming for many years, Elijah and Anna moved into town. Mr. Spurling enjoyed playing cards; he also liked music and played the violin. He died July 1951, age age 79.

Ella lived to be 92 years old and died October 1965.
