Thomas W. Lane Is
Buried Tuesday;
Was 94 Years OldFuneral services for Thomas W. Lane, 94 year old Sac City pioneer, were held from the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon of this week. He had passed away at 7:30 p.m., on Christmas Day at the age of 94 years, 3 months, and 10 days.
Rev. Charles Smith of Sioux City, pastor of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints, was in charge. Music was furnished by B.G. Wallace, accompanied by Miss Vera Fowler. Pall bearers were grandsons, as follows: Maurice Volkerts, Arlo Shull, Lyle Townsend, Bob Shull, Pete Cramer, and Bill La Porte. Burial was made in Oakland Cemetery.
Thomas W. Lane was born Sept. 16, 1849, at Zanesville, Ohio. He was the son of Richard S. and Susan Lane, and was one of a family of 9 children, 2 of whom are still living: Mrs. Mary Thompson of Des Moines, and Belle McAulifie of Reno, NV.
He was married on July 6, 1873, to Avis Charlotte Howard and his death ends a companionship which has lasted for over 70 years of married life. He has lived 57 years in Sac County, and 50 years in the same house which they erected that many years ago.
Mr. Lane came with his family from Ohio at the age of 2 years, by ox teams in prairie schooner wagons and they located in Polk County near Polk City, his father and mother being among the early pioneers to settle in that section of the State of Iowa.
He leaves to mourn his passing the following members of his family: his aged wife who is 93 years of age, and 9 children, 2 having preceded him in death. Those remaining are Mrs. Laura Volkerts, Joe and Norman at home, Cleve and Cora (Mrs. Tom Shull) of Sac City, Edith (Mrs. J.C. Cleveland) of Arnolds Park, Orpha (Mrs. Volkerts) and J. Bryan of Mason City, and Jeane (Mrs. J.A. Deane) of Kansas City, MO. He also leaves 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
"Tommy" as he was familiarly known to many of the older people and to a goodly number of the sons of these people, had followed the profession of livestock buyer for about 45 years, having terminated this work as age slowed him down. He had been in failing health for some months and his passing came as a release from a much longer life than most individuals are permitted to enjoy.
Those from out of town who were here for the final rites were: Mrs. Ollce Roth, Mrs. Alvin Hitz, and Mrs. Cebie Meckley of Des Moines; Mrs. Eldon Finch, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Townsend, Adel; Mrs. C. Kammarmeyer, Fort Dodge; Mrs. Norma Brobeil, Lytton; Mr. and Mrs. Pete Cramer and daughter of Templeton; and Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Volkerts, Storm Lake.
