Sac City PassesMrs. Avis C. Lane passed away at her home in Sac City Saturday, August 18, 1945 at the age of 94 years. She had been confined to her bed for the past 7 years where she was cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Laura Volkerts.
The services were conducted at the Farber and Otteman Funeral home by the Rev. C.J. Smith, pastor of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints, of which Mrs. Lane had been a member for the past seventy-five years.
Pallbearers were six grandsons, Arlo Shull, Morris Volkerts, Leo Shull, Lyle Townsend, Pete Cramer and Bill LaPort.
She was born in Ottumwa, Iowa in the year 1851, and came as a child with her parents to Ankeny, Iowa where they were among the earlier settlers of Polk County. She is the last of this pioneer family of nine children. The old Howard Homestead is one of the tracts of land where the Ankeny Ordinance Plant now stands.
She was united in marriage to the late Thomas Lane on July 6, 1873, and 58 years ago came to Sac City where she has resided since. She has spent 53 years in the same house.
She leaves to mourn her passing, the following children, Laura (Mrs. Volkerts), Norman, Joe, Mrs. Tom Shull and Cleve of Sac City; Orpha (Mrs. Orpha Volkerts) of Clear Lake; Edith (Mrs. J.A. Cleveland) of Spirit Lake; Jeane (Mrs. J.A. Deane) of Kansas City, MO; J. Bryan, of Mason City; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were, Melie Meckley, Britt, IA; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rolf, Des Moines; John S. Howard, Rapid City, SD; Fletcher Howard, Waltham, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Pete Cramer, Templeton; Mrs. Eldorn Finch, Minneapolis, MN; Mrs. Janette Deane, Kansas City, MO; Mr. and Mrs. Hockaday, Clear Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Townsend, Adel; Mr. and Mrs. Morris Volkerts, Storm Lake; Avis Harrell and Bonnie Lou, Albert City; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Shull, Grand Island, NE; Norma Brobeil and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cox, Lytton.
