OBITUARY ~ JAMES ALVIN COVERDELL

James Alvin COVERDELL was born April 16, 1940 to John and Florence (STRUWE) COVERDELL. And departed this earth on December 19, 1998. Jim was 58 years, eight months and three days old.

Jim grew up helping on the family farm. He attended Jefferson Center country school and then the Diagonal Community school. He was an avid hunter.

In August 1960, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served his country for the next 20 years. He did tours of duty in Germany, Viet Nam, Hawaii and Korea. He retired in 1980 from the military.

Jim and Irene SMITH were married February 10, 1961. To this union two children were born, Clara May and John.

On December 9, 1994, Jim and Ilene FORD were married. They established their home in Creston.

Surviving Jim are his wife Ilene, daughter Clara; three grandchildren, Shasta, Tyler, and Jared; a sister Alyce McCONNELL (husband Keith) of Mount Ayr; two stepsons, Ron and Robbie, along with his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Preceding him in death were his parents; son John; and stepdaughter Christie.

Funeral services were at the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, IA on Tuesday, December 22, 1998 with Reverend Pam FARREN officiating. Musical selections were "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" and"High on the Mountain." Casketbearers were Jason FORD, Brian FORD, Ron FORD, Houston DIERS, Harold and Paul GLENDENNING. Honoary pallbearer was Wayne "Bud" ____.

Interment was in the Benton Cemetery, Benton, IA.

Military graveside rites were given by Ringgold Post #172, American Legion.
