OBITUARY ~ MARVIN DUANE AUSTIN
September 08, 1934 ~ April 21, 2008WAPELLO, Iowa — Marvin Duane AUSTIN, 73, of Wapello, died Monday, April 21, 2008, at his home.
Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2008, at the United Methodist Church, Wapello. The Revs. Scott SMITH and Harlan WINTER will officiate. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery. Family and friends will gather for a lunch and fellowship following the committal at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2008, at the church where the family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m.A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the United Methodist Church and a tree planting at the South End Park at Wapello. The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello is providing the care and arrangements.
Mr. AUSTIN was born September 8, 1934, the son of Glenn William and Maggie Elizabeth SCAMMAHORN AUSTIN, in the farm house in Worth County, Missouri. He married Dorthy ADAMS on August 26, 1956, in the Arispe Methodist Church. She preceeded him in death on January 4, 2002.
On February 14, 2004 he married Lottie Jane McCONAHAY STINEMAN in Wapello.
He attended a country one room schoolhouse in Ringgold County, Iowa and attended Delphos school. Most of his schooling was at Redding where he graduated the valedictorian of his class at Redding High School in 1952. In 1956 he graduated from Simpson College at Indianola with majors in physical education and social studies.
He taught one year of school in Ferguson, Iowa before being drafted into the U.S. Army in July of 1957. He was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany as a cryptologist. He was discharged in July of 1959.
He taught a year at Cosgrove, Iowa and seven years at Menlo before coming to Wapello and retiring in June of 1997 after 39 years of teaching. He coached girls basketball for 18 years, started the girls volleyball at Wapello in 1979 and coached volleyball for 18 years.
He received his Master’s from the University of Iowa in secondary and primary education administration in 1970.
He is survived by his three children, Kenneth and Angela AUSTIN stationed at Fort Hood, Killeen, Texas and currently serving in Iraq, Kelly and Monte LANZ of Oakville, and Karen AUSTIN of Carlisle; 11 grandchildren; three step-children, Dallas McCONAHAY of Sacramento, California, Tami and Bruce PRIER of West Burlington, and Jona and Dan PAULSON of Vancouver, Washington; two step-grandchildren; a sister, Yvonne GALLOWAY of Villisca; and a brother, Bill and Marlys AUSTIN of Columbus Junction.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorthy; and a brother, Doyle.
