Sheldon, Fern -
Mt. Ayr Record-News, May 21 - A distressing accident, and one which casts a shadow of gloom over the entire community, happened at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sheldon in Washington Township about noon Tuesday when their little six-year old daughter Fern was so severely burned that her death resulted at 12 o'clock Wednesday night. How the accident happened will never be known. The mother had gone to the garden to get vegetables for dinner, and the daughter with the two younger children were left in the house. In a very few minutes after the mother left the
house, the little girl came running to the garden, her clothing in flames. The mother smothered the flames with her coat, the little girl was carried to the house, and Doctor Landes called. Everything possible was done to relieve her, but the shock was greater than she
could bear, and at 12 o'clock on Wednesday evening the life passed out. Whether the clothing of the little girl caught fire from the stove
while she was busying herself endeavoring to help with the preparation of the mid-day meal is not known, the other children being too young to explain. The sympathy of all the people of the community goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon and the other relatives in their deep sorrow.

The funeral was held today at 11 o'clock from the Christian church in Benton and was conducted by Pastor L. C. Swan of the Mount Ayr church.
