MILDRED JOSEPHINE (GREENE) BUCKMildred Josephine (GREENE) BUCK was born on a farm near Grand River, Iowa, on February 7, 1929, the daughter of Orville Emerson and Opal Lucille (CLAY) GREENE. She passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 1987 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines where she had been a patient for 23 days.
Mildred attended high school in Creston and worked as a nurses' aid in the Creston hospital after school. She taught in the rural schools of Creston and Greenfield before her marriage.
On March 1, 1952, Mildred was united in marriage with Roland Alvin BUCK at Mount Ayr, Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Robert Wayne, Melody Marie, Mary Lee, Marjorie Lucille and Ann Marie. Following their wedding day they lived in various places in Iowa, as Roland was engaged in road construction. They moved to Tingley and farmed for seven years, and then moved to the family farm south of Mount Ayr. In 1983, Roland and Mildred moved into Mount Ayr.
Mildred worked for the Department of Human Services from January of 1974 to June of 1981 as a homemaker aid. In 1979 Mildred was diagnosed as having lupus. She battled this disease until her death. It was her hope that someday soon this disease would be better understood and treated. There were many question sconcerning this disease left unanswered to her. She sought support through information from the Lupus Foundation and by talking with other victims of the disease. A memorial has been established to the Lupus Foundation to help fulfill her wish.
Mildred continued her work with the Department of Human Services until 1981. When she was not able to continue, still she always found the strength and the time to enjoy her grandchildren. They brought her many hours of joy and company.
Mildred was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Mount Ayr. She had a great fiath and was a joy to all. Mildred was one of the most willing workers in the church. She taught Sunday School class for several years; she did a lot to help prepare the church for the 125th anniversary celebration in 1985; and she helped to plant and care for the flowers at the church. But more than what she did, we will miss Mildred for who she was -- a Christian strong in her faith and an inspiration to the rest of us.
Mildred and Roland suffered the loss of their four-year-old daughter, Mary Lee, on May 10, 1966.
Mildred is survived by her husband, Roland; one son, Robert BUCK of Mount Ayr; and three daughters, Melody WILEY and her husband, Rick, of Diagonal; Marjorie COMER and her husband, Merl, of Mount Ayr; and Ann HUGHES and her husband, David, of Creston. There are four grandchildren: Andrew WILEY, Sondra WHITE, Ashley COMER and Marjorie HUGHES.
Mildred is also survived by her parents; Orville and Opal GREENE of Tingley; one sister, Marjorie SICKELS and her husband, Gene, of Kellerton, Iowa; and three brothers, William GREENE and his wife, Marilyn, of Tracey, Iowa; Jack GREENE and his wife, Lila, of Denison, Iowa; and Dale GREENE and his wife, Alice, of Ellston; and many nephews and nieces.
Mildred always had a great interest in and care and concern for her family, relatives and many friends.
This was found in Mildred's Bible. We want to share it with you as a statement of who Mildred was:
"WHAT IS CHARITY?"
It's silence - when your words would hurt,
It's patience - when your neighbor's curt.
It's deafness - when the scandal flows.
It's thoughtfullness - for the other's woes.
It's promptness - when stern duty calls.
It's courage - when misfortune falls.Funeral services were held September 19, 1987, from the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home at Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Doris HANSON. Music was provided by Mike GREENE, Mrs. Gary BICKERS and Mrs. Roger TRULLINGER.
Casketbearers were Ken JONES, Dena FROST, Rick WILEY, Dr. Roy FELL, David SICKELS and Lloyd GLENDENNING.
Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
