OBITUARY - LEN R. BEATH

Len R. BEATH, formerly of Mount Ayr, died at 5 p.m. Sept. 4, in Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Corning United Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Don STRICKLER. Burial was in the Walnut Grove Cemetery at Corning.

A memorial was established to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association. Contributions may be sent to Roland-Lindsay Funeral Home, 905 Benton Street, Corning, Iowa 50841, or to Mrs. Harvey FIFE, 515 Crescent Drive, Carlisle, Iowa 50047.

BEATH was born June 4, 1897 in Union township in Adams County, the son of Frank and Nellie CRAMER BEATH. He was married Dec. 26, 1928 in Ottumwa to the former Pearl DELLINGER, who died in 1984.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia FIFE of Carlisle and her husband, Harvey; one son, Arnold BEATH of Jefferson; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Lura G. GRIFFIN of Harrisonburg, Va.

BEATH was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a twin brother, and a sister.

He lived in Adams County and moved to Mount Pleasant in 1930; in 1942 he returned to Corning; moved to Mount Ayr in 1955 and lived there until he retired in 1965. He and his wife retired in Corning. In 1983 he entered the Carlisle Care Center where he lived until the time of his death.

He was a farmer; a county extension director in Henry County, and a farm and home Development specialist in Ringgold-Taylor-Union counties, both for the Iowa State University Extension Service, Ames. In 1961 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of County Agriculture Agents.

He was a 55-year member of Instruction Lodge #275 A.F. and A.M.; a 50-year member of the American Legion after serving in the United States Army during World War I; had been treasurer of the Adams County Red Cross; gave active leadership to the United Methodist church and was a member of the Emblem Chapter #64 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
