MRS. JOHN E. SCOTT CALLED BY DEATH

Community Mourns Death of Another Ringgold County Pioneer Home Maker

In the passing of Mrs. John E. SCOTT on Monday, September 12, 1932, this community mourns the loss of another of Ringgold county's pioneer home-makers. This death marks the initial break in the immediate family. Mrs. SCOTT has been a resident of the county since 1862, more than half a century having been spent in Mount Ayr. Throughout these many years she has proven herself, time and again, a capable, conscientious worker in all community activities. As a neighbor and friend there was none more loyal. As a club woman she performed in a most creditable manner any duties assigned to her. She was a member of D.A.R., of P.E.O., of Eastern Star, and was long affiliated with Monday Club and Kensington Club, two of Mount Ayr's oldest organization. So long as health permitted Mrs. SCOTT was a generous contributor to the work of the church.

Clementina Rachael, daughter of Martha (CHRISTY) and Chambers Karr PIERSON, was born in Marietta, Ohio [in February, 1859]. She was one of a family of five, all of whom have preceded her in death with the exception of one sister, Mrs. Ellis TRINDLE of Los Angeles, Calif. At a very early age, she with her brother and sisters suffered the loss of their mother, an irreparable loss. Later Mr. PIERSON remarried and came to Ringgold county with his wife and small children. They established their home in Monroe township, and, in this day of change, it is interesting to note this has remained the C. K. PIERSON homestead, until within recent years, when it came into the possession of the SCOTTS.

In addition to the education received in the rural schools, it was Mrs. SCOTTS' privilege to attend a seminary in Garden Grove, Iowa. This period was one of the happiest in her girlhood. After completing the required course, she followed the profession of teaching until her marriage to John E. SCOTT. It is an inspiration to have known this worthy couple, who, from the day of their marriage, until death brought to a close this sacred partnership, have remained happy lovers. Few women have given themselves more unselfishly to the business of homemaking. In these last years, confronted by the failing health of herself and her husband, her fortitude has been nothing short of heroic.

Three children have blessed this home - Walter K., Sue M., now Mrs. Floyd CLARK, and Wilber H. As these sons and the daughter grew to manhood and womanhood, and themselves entered into the sacred bonds of marriage, this mother heart broadened out and received and loved the new daughters and the son as her very own. In the years to come, the memory of this good mother's untiring devotion will be their most priceless heritage. Perhaps the greatest delight of her later life was found in her five grandchildren. They are Gretchen and Eleanor CLARK, Virginia, James and John SCOTT. Every moment spent with them was most precious, and their letters to her were read and reread - their ambitions and achievements gave her unbounded joy.

Thus closes the life work of a devoted wife, a loving mother, and an adoring grandmother. "Her children rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."

Whose love can equal the love of a mother -
Whose the devotion so loyal and true!
Who suffers so much with such joy for another -
Who works with such pleasure as mother for you!
You hail with delight the friendship of others
You revel in love of the sweetheart you've won,
Yet where do you find a friendship like mother's
Unbroken till death calls and life's work is done.

Funeral services were held at the home yesterday (Wednesday) forenoon at 10:30, being conducted by Rev. E. S. MENOHER, pastor of the M. E. church, and interment was in Rose Hill cemetery [Mount Ayr].

NOTE: Martha's father Chambers Karr PIERSON was born in Ohio, January of 1828, and died in Ringgold County, Iowa on February 20, 1911. Martha's step-mother, Hannah (?) PIERSON was born in 1835, and died February 27, 1917. They were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
