RICHARD GALE SALTZMAN

Richard Gale SALTZMAN (92), of Mount Ayr passed away of natural causes on May 22, 2008 at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr.

Richard was born on January 10, 1916 to Bert and Lora (DAVIS) SALTZMAN on the family farm Southeast of Mount Ayr in Poe Township. He graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1934. He married Frances SHEUMAKER of Redding on May 2, 1945.

He was a farmer for 47 years until retirement in 1993. With the exception of the time spent in Ireland, Great Brittan , North Africa, and Italy with the Army’s 109th Medical Battalion of the 34th Infantry Division during WWII, he lived his entire life in Ringgold County. From his youth until several years after retirement, Richard maintained bee colonies and sold honey directly to regular customers and from a “take the honey-leave the money stand” in his farms front yard. In addition to beekeeping Richard also enjoyed taking care of his orchard, berry patches and fishing ponds. He had a love and wide knowledge of nature, local wildlife and fishing which he passed on to his four grandsons.

When he wasn’t spending time on out on his farm, Richard was an active member in the Mount Ayr community. As a committed member of the Mount Ayr United Methodist Church, he participated in the United Methodist Men and the Board of Trusties. However, Richard’s main passion was working to maintain the church and the grounds physically and aesthetically. After moving into town, he also became a member of the Lion’s Club and became involved in additional community service.

Richard was proceeded in death by his parents, brothers, Lial SALTZMAN and Robert SALTZMAN, sister-in-law, Dorothy (Lial) SALTZMAN, and brother-in-law, Chriss (Blondena) SALTZMAN.

Survivors include wife, Frances of Mount Ayr, sister, Blondena of West Linn, Oregon, two daughters, Diane SALTZMAN of Adel, Iowa, and Patty HERRINGTON of Boulder, Colorado, son-in-law Phil HERRINGTON of Boulder, grandson Neil and wife Ashley ALDRICH of Adel, grandson Benjamin and wife Carla ALDRICH of Iowa City, grandson Blake HERRINGTON of Boulder, grandson Grant HERRINGTON of Boulder, and sister-in-law Nina (Robert) SALTZMAN of Mount Ayr.

Services were held Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. from United Methodist Church of Mount Ayr, Iowa.
