OBITUARY - GEORGE VIRDEN.
George S. A. D. VIRDEN was born June 10, 1860, in Shelby county, Illinois. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane HILL May 13, 1880. To this union were born twelve children, four having died in infancy. He came to Iowa in 1900, settling near Leon, and later moving to a farm near Decatur City. After living there some ten or twelve years, he moved to Kellerton. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge No. 425, having joined May 12, 1918.
He was known as George, the stock buyer, throughout Decatur and Ringgold counties. He took ill suddenly from the flu and heart trouble and passed away at his home at 10:30 Sunday morning, March 25, 1928, at the age of 67 years, nine months and 15 days. He was down town only Saturday and did not seem to be in very ill health. His death was very unexpected. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Mrs. Mary VIRDEN, three sons, William Andrew and Rolla A., both of Kellerton, and Jake, of Leon; five daughters, Mrs. Emma ASTLEFORD, Mrs. Julia JORGENSON, Mrs. Sadie PLUMB and Miss Maude, all of Des Moines, and Mrs. Mabel FARMER, of Kellerton, sixteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild; also one brother, three half- brothers, one half-sister and host of friends.
NOTE: Interment was at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton, Ringgold County, Iowa.
Mary Jane (HILL) VIRDEN, wife of George S.A.D., was born in 1861, and died in 1940 with interment at Maple Row Cemetery. Of Mary Jane and George VIRDEN's children:
William Andrew VIRDEN was born in 1881, and died in 1957 with interment at Maple Row Cemetery; and, Rolla A. VIRDEN was born in 1892, and died in 1963 with interment at Maple Row Cemetery.Transcription and note by Sharon R. Becker, 2008
