OBITUARY - E. E. BROWN DIES FROM INJURIES

Funeral Services Held at Eureka Church Monday Largely Attended

E. E. [Earl Eugene] BROWN, prominent and successful farmer of Rice township and one of the best known breeders of pure bred Spotted Poland China swine in southwestern Iowa, sustained injuries last Wednesday afternoon from which he died at the Missouri Methodist hospital in St. Joseph, Mo., early Sunday morning. Mr. BROWN was at the home of his brothers-in-law, the DOEBERT brothers, in Rice township, when the accident happened which caused his death. It was a singular accident. Mr. BROWN was in the barn lot inspecting a bunch of mules and as he passed around one of the animals was struck in the abdomen by the leg of the animal as it was lifted in the act of fighting flies. The blow took effect on a truss which was worn on account of an abdominal rupture, breaking the truss and inflicting an abdominal wound. A physician was called and the injury was found to be such as to demand the attention of a specialist and the patient was taken to the hospital where, despite the best efforts of eminent physicians and skillful sergeons (sic), life passed out.

Announcement of the death of Mr. BROWN cast a shadow of sorrow over the entire community. In his death the county loses one of its best citizens and one who for many years had served his community faithfully and well. For many years he served his township as a member of the board of trustess. he was a man of excellent business ability and brought to the service of his township the exercise of the same good judgment and careful attention which made him successful in the conduct of his private business.

The high regard in which Mr. BROWN was held by neighbors and friends was attested by the large attendance at the funeral which was held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Eureka church. The funeral was conducted by T. S. RHOADES, assisted by Rev. Theo KIES and Rev. E. S. MENOHER and burial was in Rose Hill cemetery [Mount Ayr, IA]. The following obituary was read at the funeral:

Earl Eugene BROWN was born July 16, 1879, in Rice township, Ringgold county, Iowa, and died in Missouri Methodist hospital, St. Joseph, Mo., September 30, 1928, as a result of an accident occuring September 26. He was 49 years, one month and 14 days old. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James M. BROWN, pioneers of Rice township. He was brought up on the home farm. In 1908 he was united in marriage to Mary B. ROSS of Grant City, Missouri, and with his wife moved to his home in Rice township where he lived ever since that time.

Mr. BROWN was widely known and made a countless number of friends. He was interested in public affairs, holding various offices and discharged his duties in a most commendable way. He loved his home, loved his farm and was much interested in the welfare of his community. He had a generous disposition, ready to help anyone who needed his help.

He leaves here his wife, his mother, a brother and a sister.

Mr. BROWN united with the Eureka Methodist church in the winter of 1906. It was his expressed wish that this church should not give up its work in this community. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge and was always interested in the work of the order. His going at this time is hard to understand and heard to bear, but in the midst of death we are in the midst of the hope of eternal life, and underneath us are the divine arms of the helping God.

Card of Thanks.
We are profoundly grateful to the neighbors and friends for every kind act and for the sympathy so generously bestowed on the occasion of the death of our husband, son and brother. Since it is not possible for us to see each of you and personally express our thanks, we trust that this may be accepted as an expression of the gratitude we feel. -- Mrs. E. E. BROWN, Mrs. Mary BROWN, Andrew BROWN, Mrs. Pearl HOLMAN.
