Allene Fleming, 88 of Montezuma died, March 30, at her home in Montezuma. Services were April 3, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home, Montezuma. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grinnell Regional Hospice or the Montezuma Food Pantry.
Allene Nellie Fleming, daughter of Everette and Nellie (Boonstra) Plate, was born on April 8, 1928 in Rose Hill. She attended Montezuma School and was graduated from Searsboro High School in 1945.
Allene married Lowell Richman in 1946. To this union three children were born, Ron, Linda and Rick. They later divorced. May 8, 1954, Allene was married to Lawrence Fleming at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together they had two children, Karen and Gregory. Allene worked at the Montezuma Maid Rite and the Montezuma Light Plant. In 1979, Allene started working at the Poweshiek County Clerk of Court office and was the Deputy Clerk, retiring in 1990.
Allene was very active in the Order of Eastern Star, where she was appointed to many offices. She was star point, worthy matron, conductress and associate conductress, secretary and treasurer. She was also a member of Montezuma Garden Club, Daughters of the Nile, Niles Sewing Club of Oskaloosa, Piecemakers Guild, Montezuma Country Club, Montezuma Methodist Church and Montezuma Methodist Women. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, flowers and above all her family. She loved to play cards and belonged to several card groups.
She is survived by three sons, Ron Richman of Skiatook, OK, Rick (Pam) Richman of Portland, OR, and Gregory (Diana) Fleming of Montezuma; daughter, Karen Baethke of Montezuma; 19 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren; a brother, John (Vivian) Plate of Grinnell; a son-in-law, Bill Thomas of Cedar Rapids, many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence Fleming; a daughter, Linda Thomas; a great-great grandson, Abel (Nicholson) Lewis; a son-in-law, Gene Baethke; a brother, Sydney Plate and four sisters, Wilma Storm, Cora Roof, Lena Van Steenis and Phyllis Tice.
