WOMAN KILLED IN
CAR-TRAIN CRASH

A Grinnell woman who was the mother of four children and expecting a fifth was killed instantly Friday when the car she was driving collided with an east-bound Rock Island passenger train here.

Dead is Barbara Fleming, 37, of 408 Broad St. She was alone in the car when the crash occurred.

According to investigating officers, Mrs. Fleming did not see the oncoming train until too late. The train struck her car broadside and sent it crashing into a ditch. Thee were no signals at the crossing located at the First Ave. extension just west of Grinnell. Rock Island tracks run diagonally across the road.

The daughter of Arthur J. Bladt and Helen Magyar Bladt, she was born July 9, 1932 at Newton. She received her education in the Newton schools and was a graduate of Newton High School.

On July 14, 1956, she was married to John J. Fleming at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. Since her marriage she lived in Grinnell.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was also the immediate past president of the Davis P.T.A.

She is survived by her husband, John; her four children, Patrick James, Mary Elizabeth, Michael Damien and Anna Marie; her four step-children, John Joseph, Patricia Mavourneed, Marcia Kathleen and Daniel David; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Bladt of Newton; her grandmother, Mrs. George Magyar of Little Rock, Ark.; a sister, Lois Marie Townsend of Monrovia, Calif.; two brothers, Robert J. Bladt of Kent, England, and Donald A. Bladt of Las Vegas, Nev.

Funeral services for Mrs. Fleming were at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Leo V. Kuebrich officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Rosary services were held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Arlo Taylor, Gordon Hendrickson, I.F. Jones, Jerry Phipps, Warner Steele and Wesley Ahrens.
