LOUISE MCLAIN

GRINNELL - Louise McLain, 99, of Grinnell, formerly of Montezuma, passed away Saturday evening, October 20, 2018 at the Mayflower Health Care Center in Grinnell. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Unity Point Grinnell Regional Hospice or the Mayflower Health Care Center to be used for the resident's activities. Holland-Coble Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Daisy McLain, the daughter of Benjamin and Stella (Fayer) James, was born on July 15, 1919 in Montezuma, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Charles Robert "Bob" McLain in Rock Island, Illinois on January 2, 1946. They were blessed with five children: Connie R., Donna F., William R., Robert J., and Linda L. Louise and Charles farmed northeast of Montezuma on the McLain farm. In 1956, they purchased and moved to their own farm one mile west. Louise was kept busy raising her family. She always had a large garden and strawberry patch and enjoyed planting flowers and doing embroidery. The family also went on summer vacations. After the family was grown, she enjoyed cooking Sunday and holiday dinners for her family. As a young girl growing up, she enjoyed playing the accordion, riding her bicycle and horse and was also a 4-H member. In the fall of 1981, Louise and Charles retired and moved to their home in Montezuma. In October of 1999, they moved to Brookside South in Grinnell. Louise was a member of the Willing Workers Club and Grange. They spent several winters in Arizona and Texas. Charles passed away in 2008 and Louise continued to live at Brookside until she moved to the Mayflower Health Care Center in January of 2012.

Her memory is honored by her five children, Connie Breuklander of Oskaloosa, Donna (Gary) Waterbeck of Shellsburg, William (Nancy) McLain of Fair Oaks, California, Robert (Ellen) McLain of Brooklyn and Linda (Jeff) Slaymaker of Clarinda; eight grandchildren: Crystal (Barry Visser) Breuklander, David (Amie) Breuklander, Angela (Darold) Ruley, Julie McLain, Bill McLain, Molly (Chad) Tanke, Amy (Travis) Kirchner, and Josie (Nic Paulsen) Slaymaker; 15 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Johnston; and many nieces and nephews.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; her sisters, Florence Wiley, Erma Holcomb, Arlene Johnston and a brother, Warren James; grandson, Robert McWilliams McLain; great grandson, Daniel Van Ersvelde; grandson-in-law, Brett Van Ersvelde and son-in-law, Dick Breuklander.
