John D. "Jack" Johnston, 78, of Wooster, Ohio died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Veterans Administration Regional Hospital, Wade Park Division in Cleveland, Ohio. Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, Wooster. Friends may call Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home, where Masonic Services will be held at 5:45 p.m. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
He was born July 30, 1926, in Montezuma, Iowa to John L. and Ida (Reed) Johnston. He was a graduate of Iowa City High School and the University of Iowa in mechanical-industrial engineering. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the European, American and Pacific Theaters. He had been a deputy for the Wayne County Sheriffs Department for five years, and was also with the Shreve Police Department. He spent over 20 years in industry, 11 of which were with the Wooster Brush Co., as divisional manager, spent eight years with the Wayne County Sheriff's Reserve as a deputy, sergeant, lieutenant and secretary. He had been assistant plant engineer for the J.I. Case Co. in Burlington, Iowa and factory manager of Sherwin-Williams Corp. He started his Masonic service in Iowa City, Iowa, was a member of Scottish Rite Temple in Fort Wayne, Ind., was Past Patron twice of the Eastern Star, Charter Member of the Deshler, Ohio Lions Club. He was also past member of the Rotary Clubs of Peru, Ind. and Johnson City, Tenn., a 10-year member of the Wooster Kiwanis Club, with two years as chairman of Pancake Day, a past member and secretary of the Burlington, Iowa Jaycees, and was past vice president of the Chamber of Commerce of Peru, Ind. He was currently a member of Millersburg Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. He was an inactive lieutenant in Ohio State Militia Military Police under Governor Ohio and the Ohio State Constitution.
Surviving are his children, John of Greer, S.C., Scott of Shreve, Mark of Huntsville, Ala., Jim of Powell, Bob of Wooster, Darby Seibert of Wooster and Leah Hall of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Jeanne Freeman of Iowa City, Iowa and special friend, Hazel Bloom of Medina. His wives, Ann Campbell Johnston and Virginia Miller Johnston, died previously.
