ANTHONY DEMARO

Anthony (Tony) DeMaro, 87, of Yankton, S.D., formerly of Grinnell, died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 20, at the United Church of Christ-Congregational in Yankton with the Rev. Joe Schulte officiating.

He was born Nov. 26, 1922, in Nebraska City, Neb., the son of Jimmy and Marguerite DeMaro, where he grew up and graduated from St. Bernard's Academy High School in 1940 and from the University of Nebraska in 1946 with a major in music.

He served in the United States Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

He was united in marriage with Betty Petty on Aug. 7, 1946. His first teaching job was as band director in Scranton, Iowa. He was recalled into the United States Army in 1950 during the Korean War.

He became band director in Grinnell in 1955, moving later to similar positions in other school districts. He and his family moved to Y6ankton in 1968 where he became a counselor. On June 21, 1980, he was united in marriage with Joyce Savage. He retired in the spring of 1990.

He is survived by his wife Joyce DeMaro of Yankton; his daughter Toni Anderson of West Newberry, Mass.; his sons James DeMaro of Belvidere, N.J., Rick DeMaro of Byfield, Mass., and Chris DeMaro of Omaha, Neb.; ten grandchildren; and one brother, George DeMaro of Cozad, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents.
