Aug. 1912MRS. J. HOWARD SANDERS
Betsie Azulia Taylor was born February 5, 1835, in Manchester, Vermont, where she grew to womanhood. She was educated in the public schools and in Burn Burton Seminary of Manchester. After completing her education she spent the early years of her womanhood teaching school. She was a descendant of the old New England Putnam family, who came to America in the late years of the 1600's and the early years of 1700. She moved with the other members of the family to Owatonna, Minn., where she resided for about a year. On August 13, 1866, she was united in marriage to J. Howard Sanders and came to Grinnell with her husband, immediately after her marriage. This has been her home ever since.
Mr. and Mrs. Sanders resided in the Grinnell house for about two years. The Sanders brothers then bought land northwest of the city and Mr. and Mrs. Sanders moved to the farm. Here they lived until about ten years ago, when they left the farm and established their home here.
Three children came to the home, Edwin, Anna and Harry. The latter died when about five years old. Two children and her husband mourn the departure of a loving and devoted wife and mother.
Mrs. Sanders united early in life with the Christian church. When she came to Grinnell she united with the Baptist church and has been a consistent and faithful member. In the days of her active life she took an interest in all departments of the church work. She sang in the choir, occupying a seat beside Mrs. Brande. She helped to support the cause of missions and to carry on the Sunday school. She did what she could to help evangelize the world. She was devoted in heart and mind to the truth of the Word and rejoiced in its progress in the world.
