Englebert Martens a pioneer resident of Hartwick, Iowa for about 38 years passed away at his homne at 2:00 Thursday afternoon, April 9th after several months of illness patiently suffering with Bright's Disease, at the advanced age of six days less than 75 years. The deceased was born in Bassevelda, Belgium, April 15, 1839. He came to America in 1871, farming around Atkinson, Illinois for five years, thence came to Victor, Iowa and was an early settler of Poweshiek County, farming near Hartwick, Iowa on the same place for 34 years and moved to town four years ago to take a long needed rest for the remaining years.

In October 1883 he was married to Paulina Cornelis who survives him. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and 8 children, 2 sons and 6 daughters and two daughters died in infancy. Mrs. Mary Wauters of Vicor, Mrs. Gusta Bartachek of Brooklyn, Mrs. Emma Cleppe, Peter, Jennie, Clara, Grace, and Freddie Martens of Hartwick.

The funeral services were held at Bridget's Church, Monday, April 13th, at 10:00. The Rev. Father Frencken preached the funeral sermon, also officiated at the grave internment in Calvary Cemetery.

The pall beareres were A. Soer, Louis Wauters, F. Cleppe, A. DeLoof, A. DeVilder and C. Christian. This was among one of the largest funerals held at Victor.
