James Hurdle was born March 5, 1840 at Circleville, Ohio. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Becks at Haldane, Ill., October 25, 1866. To this union were born five children. They are: George W. of Marshalltown, Esta, who departed this life July 6, 1883, Matthew James of Kellogg, Elsie Hunter of Grinnell and Mark L. who departed this life January 17, 1917, just two days before the death of his mother.

Mr. and Mrs. Hurdle celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary October 25, 1916. Mr. Hurdle came to Iowa in 1869 and with the exception of the last fifteen years resided in and around Newburg. At the death of his wife, Mr. Hurdle came to Grinnell, where he has made his home since with his daughter, Mrs. Allen Hunter.

He died at 2 o’clock a.m., Aug 21 at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 15 days. He was converted at a very early age. He has belonged to the Church of God for the past sixty years and was a very active member in the Newburg church during his lifetime there.

Mr. Hurdle was a man who was very fond of his home and children and took a great interest in his grandchildren. Besides his three living children he leaves to mourn his loss one brother, Edward, Rockwell City, and one sister, Mary Harmon, Forreston, Ill., seven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. He has always been a very active and ambitious man and the last few years was more so than was best for him. He had been in very poor health for the past three months and last Saturday, a week ago, became very ill.
