MERLE O. THOMPSON

Merle O. Thompson, 75, of 627 East St., Grinnell, died of a heart ailment Thursday, Feb. 22, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were conducted Monday evening at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stanley I. Meade of the First Baptist Church officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers were Carl Binegar, Jerry Davis, Raymond Dee, Ed Erickson, Richard Hatfield, Warren Miller and Paul Walton. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials in Mrs. Thompson's name may be made to the First Baptist Church.

The daughter of Calvin and Nancy Jane Hawkins Hatfield, she was born Nov. 11, 1914, in Millerton, Iowa. She was a 1932 graduate of Millerton High School.

She was married to Dean Howard Thompson Feb. 19, 1939, in Chariton. During World War II the couple lived in Cicero, Ill., where she worked for the Victor Gasket Co. They then came to Grinnell where Mrs. Thompson was employed by the Grinnell Shoe Company and, for 25 years, with Saga Foods and the Grinnell College Food Service. For five years prior to her retirement, she was the cook at the Grinnell Senior Center.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Grinnell Lady Elks.

Surviving are her husband; one son, Joe of South Milwaukee, Wis.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Alma Roe of Los Angeles, Calif., and Gladys Eddy of Council Bluffs; and one brother, Kenneth Hatfield of Libertyville, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Martha McKinley, Doris Huntley, Twila Pesavinto and one in infancy; two brothers, Theodore and Ellis Hatfield; and three half-sisters.
