Ferris Seaverns, 88, of New Sharon, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 4, 1997 at the New Sharon Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 6 at the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon with Rev. John Barkett officiating and Rev. David Pinkerton assisting. Burial was in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.

Ferris Seaverns was born February 4, 1909 near Montezuma, the son of Lyman and Sarah Cowell Seaverns. He graduated from Montezuma High School in 1927. he was united in marriage to Esther Jones Reitsma on June 26, 1948, in Oskaloosa. They farmed in the Montezuma and New Sharon area until 1952, except for four years when he worked as a blacksmith at Blairstown. He had worked in the grain elevator in New Sharon and Barnes City until retiring as manager of Farmer's Co-op in 1974. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a step-daughter, Karol Lue Reitsma; a brother, James Seaverns and two sisters, Ruth Pierce and Helen Seaverns.

Ferris is survived by his wife, Esther of New Sharon; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Janet Reitsma of Melrose; two step-grandchildren, Allen Reitsma and Christine Thompson; and a niece, Betty Ballard of Grinnell.

Memorials may be made to the New Sharon Fire and Ambulance Department and/or the American Cancer Society.
