ELVIN KIRBY

Elvin Kirby, 78, a resident of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Knoxville for the past four years and a native of Poweshiek County, died Wednesday, Aug. 12.

The body has been cremated. Memorial services will be held at Hazelwood cemetery in Grinnell at a later date.

He was the son of Benjamin and Effie Gregson Kirby and was born Jan. 3, 1920, in Pleasant Township. He was married to Ruth Cummins June 6, 1960, in Elko, Nev.

Mr. Kirby served with the Army Air Force in Europe during World War II and was discharged in 1945 as a master sergeant.

He owned and operated Grinnell Home Decorating from 1973 to 1978. He and his family moved to Bloomfield, N.M. He retired in 1986. They moved back to Iowa in 1992.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Colleen Loucks of Tigard, Ore.; three sons, Ben of Mt. Pleasant, Dan of Grinnell and Jim of Farmington, N.M.; one sister, Eulah Kirby of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one great-great-grandchild.
