February 20, 1856 --- May 12, 1917

Laura Johnston, daughter of John R. and Jane R. was born in Rock Island County, Ill., February 20, 1856 and passed from this life Saturday evening, May 12, 1917, at 10:30 pm, aged 61 years, 2 months and 22 days. She lived in Illinois until she was about twelve years of age when she moved with her parents to Poweshiek county, Iowa, where she has since resided. She had eight brothers and four sisters.

She was married March 28, 1881, to J. W. Brannian who still survives her. Eight sons and three daughters were born to this union. All survive her and are living in this county. She also has eight grandchildren. She was a true and faithful wife, a wise and constant mother, a choice neighbor, friend and citizen. She will be much missed from all of the circles where she has been associated. She was of a religious turn of mind and a Methodist constituent. We come to say farewell, trusting that she even now well fareth in the beautiful beyond.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. M. Smith. The body was laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Those from a distance attending the funeral of Mrs. J. W. Brannian were Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Johnston, Coggon, Iowa, the former a brother of Mrs. Brannian; John Lipton and sister, Mrs. Rathbone, of Preemption, Ill.; Mrs. W. F. McQuitty and son, Fielding, of Correctionville, Iowa; David Brannian of Randolph, Ia.; Mrs. Sarah Johnston of Rock Island, Ill.
